Thank you for your patient understanding as we try to deal with COVID-19 and keep our music alive. We also thank you for the support you have given us. It makes it possible for us to plan for our 40th season of great chamber music. The Coronavirus pandemic has played havoc with nearly all public gatherings and concerts all over the world, and 1807 & Friends’ concerts are no exception. Until we have an effective vaccine available in sufficient quantities, it remains risky to resume our concerts to live audiences. Also, the Academy of Vocal Arts is not available to us, as it is currently closed to all outside events. Therefore we will begin our 40th season with some virtual concerts. Here is a link to our opening concert by the Florian Trio (violinist Nancy Bean, cellist Lloyd Smith, and guitarist Allen Krantz), now posted online. Here is a link to our concert by Trio Montage (Nancy Bean, violin and Pellegrina viola; Lloyd Smith, cello; and Anne Sullivan, harp), now posted online. Here is a link to our concert by the Casimir Trio (Nancy, Lloyd, and pianist Marcantonio Barone), now posted online. Here is a link to our concert by the Smitholm String Quartet/Quintet (Nancy Bean, violin I; Nancy Bean, violin II; Nancy Bean, viola I; Nancy Bean, viola II; Lloyd Smith, cello), now posted online. Formed during the COVID-19 pandemic and made real with some electronic magic developed by I.T. wizard Brian Lewis, the Smitholm String Quartet/Quintet makes its performing debut with this virtual concert video. Violinist and violist, Nancy Bean was Assistant Concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra for 23 years. She is Artistic Director of 1807 & Friends and the founder of the Wister Quartet. Her husband, Lloyd Smith, was Assistant Principal cellist of The Philadelphia Orchestra. He is cellist of the Wister Quartet and a composer of many chamber works. During the long winter months, this project grew out of a desire to play quartets for our audience this season. Send us your email address if you would like to be notified of upcoming concerts. Thank you so very much for your continuing friendship and commitment to great chamber music. Stay well, stay safe, and we look forward to getting back to normal as soon as we possibly can. The extended family of 1807 & Friends has lost one of its own. Davyd Booth’s husband, Christopher Carlos Perez, is at peace after a long, valiant battle with lymphoma. We dedicate these concerts to his memory.
“Sounds of the Strings”We are closing out our pandemic year of virtual concerts with a special concert for children; it is appropriate for children of all ages. If you know a child, a grandchild, a teacher, or anyone who might be interested, please feel free to forward this link to them — it will remain up until we are able to return to schools in person. Many thanks to the Constellation Community Champions grant, the Philadelphia Cultural Fund, the Borowsky Family Foundation, and Connelly Foundation, whose support made this video possible. ![]() Mr. Boccherini writes his Minuet

1807 & Friends is all about great classical chamber music. We had our beginnings at a Philadelphia house address, 1807 Sansom Street, where students and professional world-class musicians got together to explore the marvelous world of chamber music. 1807 & Friends was incorporated and gave its first public concert in 1981, which was hailed with a standing ovation. Our concert subscription series is now in its 40th season. We began giving children's concerts in 1992 and in 1996 developed the first of a series of imaginative interactive educational presentations called "Sounds of the Strings," which we bring into schools in the Philadelphia region. These have become some of the most sought-after music education programs in the area. Our Young Composers Project, part of the Philadelphia School District’s Office of Strategic Partnerships, returned to the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Their orchestra students composed another outstanding piece about finding the way to grow into maturity and empowerment called “A New Beginning — a Delicate Triumph.” This Project is underwritten by a generous grant from the Borowsky Family Foundation. Our many outreach concerts and lectures have also become an integral part of our work. We perform the great chamber works spanning nearly three centuries. Our constituent ensembles are made up of world-class musicians who have been praised for their stunning performances of music which many people consider to be some of the world’s greatest creative achievements. |
